Financial Aid
Transfer Student Checklist
- Students transferring to WVU from another college or university must apply for admission as a transfer student and provide all required documentation such as grade transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities. Contact Admissions for admission applications and a complete list of requirements for admission.
- You should request that any scheduled disbursements of financial aid proceeds at your previous college or university be canceled. If these disbursements are not canceled in a timely manner, your financial aid at WVU could be delayed. It is also important to remember that any funds you received for the current academic year will be considered when determining your remaining eligibility for financial aid at WVU. Students transferring mid-year are affected the most by these circumstances.
- If you did not apply for financial aid at your previous college or university, you should immediately apply for assistance at WVU by completing and submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can complete the FAFSA online.
- If you are entering summer school as a transfer student, a supplemental form is required to determine your summer eligibility. Any prior funds received during the current academic year will be considered when determining your summer eligibility. Summer request forms are typically available around January 15.
- If you have already completed the FAFSA for financial aid consideration at another school for the current academic year, you should request that the information be sent to WVU. You may make this request by calling the federal processor at 1-800-4-FED-AID. You should have the federal processor add WVU as a school to receive your FAFSA information. You will need to have your Student Aid Report handy when you call the Federal Processor. The Federal Processor will request your DRN. The DRN is a unique number found only on your copy of the Student Aid Report. The Federal Processor will also request WVU’s school code number. Our school code number is 003827. Typically, the WVU Financial Aid Office will receive your information within two weeks of your request.
- Once the results of your FAFSA are received, you may need to provide additional documentation to our office, such as signed copies of Federal Income Tax forms. Not all students are selected for verification of income, so you may not have to provide additional documentation. We will contact you if you need to submit additional documentation, or you may contact us after you receive your Student Aid Report.
- If you wish to borrow student loans while attending WVU, you do not need to submit a loan application in addition to the FAFSA. You will automatically be offered loan proceeds if you qualify.
- If you are transferring from another college of university and you have been receiving a WV Grant or a Pennsylvania Grant, you should contact the respective state grant programs to inform them of your transfer.

- If you receive a Financial Aid Award Letter, it is essential that you complete all requested items on the form and return it to the Financial Aid Office in the time allotted.
- Financial aid awards are initially based on full-time enrollment. If you are not planning to attend full-time, you must notify the Financial Aid Office. You may do this when you return your award letter.
- If you accept student loan proceeds and you are a first-time student loan borrower, you must attend an entrance counseling session that will explain the loan program and your rights and responsibilities as a borrower. These will be conducted in group sessions, and you will be notified of the time and place. You may complete the entrance counseling requirement online. Loan awards are not considered finalized until all promissory notes are signed and you have attended or completed entrance counseling session, if required.
- After you receive your award letter and have registered for your classes, your financial aid awards that may be applied toward amounts due the University should appear on your billing statement. If your financial aid does not appear on your bill, you should immediately contact the Financial Aid Office. In some cases, financial aid shown as a credit on your bill may have outstanding requirements that must be met before the aid can pay toward your bill. For instance, we may credit your bill for a loan for which we have not received a promissory note. It is important that you complete all required paperwork to ensure that your financial aid pays toward your bill as anticipated.
- Any finalized financial aid awards will first be applied to tuition/fees and room/board charges owed to the University. This will occur shortly before the beginning of each semester. If there is any remaining financial aid proceeds after these obligations are paid, a refund check will be made payable to the student and mailed to the student’s local address or another address designated by the student. Refund checks are usually mailed during the first week of the semester.
- In order to receive financial assistance at WVU, you must be making satisfactory academic progress. This policy monitors your cumulative GPA, and the percentage of hours you have earned toward graduation of those you have attempted. A paper copy of the policy may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office.
