Getting Started

Adventure West Virginia

Adventure WV is a unique orientation course for first-year students at WVU. It offers participants diverse experiences and opportunities to learn about themselves, future classmates, WVU, and West Virginia. Participants will earn 3 credits upon successful completion of the program which is an alternative for University 101 (a required course).

Join your fellow students and participate in the Adventure West Virginia Program offered by the WVU Student Recreation Center.

Adventure WV currently offers four types of courses:

Explore WV: This is an 8-day expedition in which students use West Virginia’s natural resources as the classroom! Activities students will be participating in include: introduction to rock climbing at Coopers Rock State Forest, day hiking/sightseeing – Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods, Seneca Rocks, Cranberry Wilderness Area, tour of Greenbank National Radio Observatory, backpacking at Spruce Knob National Recreation Area, and white-water rafting on the lower New River!

Odyssey WV: As the name suggests, Odyssey WV is a journey! It’s a journey not only in the physical sense of the word (you will see some beautiful places in West Virginia including Blackwater Falls and Seneca Rocks). It’s also a journey in group development and personal challenge as you interact with WVU’s state-of-the-art Challenge Course, camp at a beautiful nearby park, canoe or kayak on a beautiful West Virginia lake, and explore some beautiful West Virginia trails! Come join us for an Odyssey that will propel you into your college career!

Wilderness WV: Participants in this 5-day program will backpack through some of West Virginia’s most beautiful wilderness! Spend 5 days and 4 nights exploring the rolling plains and majestic views of Dolly Sods. Join us on an unforgettable trek through the beautiful high plains of West Virginia!

Habitat WV: Students participating in this week-long program will help build homes for families in need, working hand-in-hand with Monongalia County Habitat for Humanity. This program places less emphasis on “outdoor adventure” and more emphasis on community service! Students will be provided with indoor lodging accommodations and classrooms. Two days of the program are set aside to provide students opportunities to explore West Virginia’s recreational resources! Depending on weather, activities may include: canoeing, rock climbing, caving, white-water rafting, or hiking.

Mission

The Adventure WV program was developed to orient and transition new students for life at WVU. This is accomplished through the use of wilderness to create opportunities for personal development and friendships. The program is built on quality, fun, and care for the environment.
