Housing
FAQs
How do I get an application?
After you have been admitted to the University and have paid the academic deposit, information about applying for on-campus housing will be mailed to you. Please allow two to three weeks from the time you pay the deposit for the information to arrive.
What are the current housing costs?
Please see the Housing Web site.
When are housing deposits due?
There is no deadline for the housing deposit. However, assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s important to return the application/contract and deposit early. The housing application/contract is a legally binding contract committing you to live in campus housing for the entire academic year. However, we will refund a portion of the deposit if we receive your written notification of intent to cancel your contract by May 1 (December 1 for the spring term). After this date, deposits are nonrefundable regardless of when you pay the deposit. Applications/contracts can be canceled if you are not attending WVU by notifying us in writing or using the online cancellation system. Deposit money is credited toward your fall term tuition and fees.
When are housing assignments made?
For the fall term, the housing selection process begins in February for new students. The process begins in November for the spring term. More about the room selection process
Do I have to sign up for a meal plan?
Yes, participation in a meal plan is required.
Once I choose a meal plan, can I change my mind?
You can increase your meal plan at any time. Before the term begins you can also decrease your meal plan. Once the term begins, however, there is a limited amount of time to reduce your meal plan.
Can I live off-campus?
WVU requires all single, first-year students (including transfers with fewer than 29 transferable credit hours) to live in University housing. Students living at home with parents within commuting distance of WVU, married students, students with children, and students age 21 and older are exempt from this requirement.
To be considered a commuter, you must live within a 50-mile radius of Morgantown with your parent(s)/guardian. Living with a sibling or other relative does not qualify you as a commuter. If you are going to commute, please complete both the top and the back of the application/contract. It is important that we have you listed as a commuter in our system to avoid sending you mail that does not apply to you.
Which residence hall is the nicest?
Each hall has its own individual characteristics. We strongly recommend that you visit our campus to look around and see for yourself.
Can I sign a housing contract for only one semester?
No, unless you are beginning in the spring term. Otherwise, the housing contract is binding for the entire academic year.
Can I bring a hot plate, microwave, air conditioner, or other appliance?
Sorry, due to fire safety regulations, these and other electrical appliances are not permitted in the residence halls.
What about refrigerators?
You may bring your own refrigerator as long as it does not exceed 2.5 cubic feet, 120 volts, and 2 amps. Refrigerators also can be rented from an independent firm during Orientation and upon your arrival in Morgantown. If you order your refrigerator during Orientation, it will be in your room when you arrive in August.
What’s the weather like in Morgantown?
The mean annual temperature is 52 degrees, and the annual rainfall is 41.2 inches. What this means is that Morgantown enjoys all of the seasons, and the weather is generally mild. There is rain in the spring and snow in the winter.
Should I bring my car to campus?
Parking on the WVU campus is difficult at best. Due to the limited number of parking spaces available, we strongly advise you to leave your car at home. For more information about parking, contact the Parking Office at 304-293-5502.
